The XLE FWD model has an EPA-estimated range rating of up to 252 miles. The XLE AWD model has an EPA-estimated range of up to 228 miles. The EPA-estimated fuel economy rating for XLE FWD is 131 MPGe city, 107 MPGe highway and 119 MPGe combined. The EPA-estimated fuel economy rating for XLE AWD is 114 MPGe city, 94 MPGe highway and 104 MPGe combined.

What am I missing here. For the European and Australian Version the rane is increased. What is that not reflected in us release. Isn't it the same battery type and size?

It comes down to how range is tested. The EPA's range numbers tend to be a bit more conservative compared to the European model for example. There isn't a universal way that range is calculated.

Had a feeling the AWD bZ would be a bit less than the ID.4 AWD that does around 240 miles.

Those numbers are preliminary estimates. Final EPA ranges will be a bit higher as Toyota are known to under-promise and over-deliver.
In Europe, the FWD bZ4X, had WLTP range estimate of 450 km, while the final official range is 516 km - about 15% up.

Do you have a reliable source for the EPA numbers being preliminary? Are they still fine tuning the car in a way as to affect range and efficiency? Wouldn't surprise me if software updates alone could make a sizeable difference.

Well, pretty much all the press-releases I've seen so far state the range numbers are "EPA-estimates".
Software update can unlock more range easily by decreasing the battery buffer, but I doubt Toyota will do that initially. May be later when they gather more battery longevity data.

But the 222 miles for an AWD Limited does appear on the window sticker.
