Rail Head Delays for Software Updates?

Has anyone else had their car delayed at a rail head for a software update?

I reserved my car over a month ago when it had been in the LA port for over a week. Over 2 weeks ago my sales rep at the local dealership said that it had left port by rail and would likely be delivered within 2 weeks.

Over a week ago he said that it had arrived in state but was at Toyota's rail head and that Toyota was holding all cars for a software update before delivery to dealerships and without any additional timeline for how long the delay might be.

Hey @COS

Did the rep at your dealership disclose what improvements or fixes will be included in that software update? A number of owners here experienced 3-4 week long delays and I wouldn't doubt that this was part of it.

Welcome to the forum @COS! I haven't heard of any delays like that. If that's true it's good that Toyota is doing this before delivering to you but they should let you know what it's for. What spec is your bZ4X?

That's interesting, my Sales rep is saying his computer shows a 30-day delay that started 5/26/22. I have also heard of shortage of parts for the port installed junk.

As asked before, what spec is your car, and you said its at the rail head in your State... what state is that? that could give me a better idea on when mine will arrive!!
AWD Limited
Colorado

Local dealer rep said that it could be related to chip shortages and that other models including other hybrids and plug-in hybrids are also being held up across the country.
Hi everyone! I've confirmed with my sales rep last Friday that my car is being delayed by 30 days as well. It was scheduled to reach the port tomorrow. He did not know the reason for the delay, he just said that it is not unusual with the delivery of brand new models. Mine is an AWD Limited.
My dealer rep also mentioned that the dealerships across the country needed to have charging stations installed before they start selling more of these plug in EVs
Any chance they are delaying delivery to miss hitting the tax credit threshold this quarter?

I have thought the same thing. Especially when the first vehicles he mentioned were also hybrids.

It wouldn’t shock me as Toyota is so close to that 200k number.

I'm now thinking this is most plausible, because my Sales rep showed me a screen that said QC-HOLD - 30-DAYS... that was on 5/26.... Toyota forces the dealerships to WAIT to sell the vehicles until they want them to by doing this... I think the only reason we've seen some sales, are for those dealerships closest to port and they were released before they put that hold on!

This, in my case, would push the railway release until 6/25 and then it would take a week at minimum on rail to get to my location! ugh... but oh well.

(I've also heard it could be a big software update, also, parts shortages for the PORT installed items) I don't think we will ever know the real reason. Unless it finally slips through to a dealership and then that dealership lets the info out. BUT, nothing on the screen-shot my dealership showed me, gave any real info... just what i mentioned above.

If that's the case, they should release everything on July 1st since that is the start of the 3rd quarter of the year and that will push all Toyota PEV and EV vehicles sold thru the end of December to qualify to the $7,500 tax credit thru the end of 2022.

Maybe. I don’t know if they’re doing this or not. Just a theory. But I do know a sale isn’t counted against the ev credits until it is final. So they could release a car on the 26th and not have it delivered to the buyer until after the 1st. Toyota is so close to that 200k mark that if they just held back the bz4xs and a few of the Primes they might be able to slide under the threshold and extend the full credit to the end of the year.

I wonder how close they are now though, since I still see new sales of bZ4X's and Primes everyday posted on some Facebook Pages! So, they are cutting it thin.... if they don't hit the mark, then there has to be some other reason for the HOLDS.

I have NOW confirmed this to not be true... by deduction... talked to my sales guy... they have a RAV4 Prime that was sitting at the railway just like my bZ4X... it did NOT have the 30-day hold and is now loaded onto the rail. My bZ4X still has the Hold. (also heard Longo Toyota in the LA area, confirmed that Toyota has already hit the 200k limit earlier this month).
